Huntington Beach Dogs: Beaches, Parks, Walking Paths, Washes and Patios
Plan the whole outing: a dog-friendly walk, somewhere to rinse off, supplies and a patio stop.
Direct answer
Start with Huntington Dog Beach or Central Park’s Best Friend Dog Park, then choose a leashed coastal or harbour walk. River Jetties has different rules on each side of the river. This guide also lists local dog washes, pet shops and patio options.

Find the right outing for your dog
A good dog day can be as simple as a shaded park loop, a bath and a patio breakfast. Match the place to your dog’s comfort around bikes, surf and other dogs. An unfenced beach, a busy shared path and a fenced dog park are different outings.
Use this as a practical directory, with public-agency, nonprofit and business links beside the relevant entries. Access, closures, hours and services can change. It is not a claim that every path or every dog business has been inspected in person.
Huntington Dog Beach: sand, parking and leash rules
Use the designated Dog Beach area north of the pier, with parking along PCH between Goldenwest and Seapoint. The Preservation Society’s visitor FAQ gives 100 Goldenwest Street as the GPS destination, daily hours of 5 a.m.–10 p.m., and no admission charge apart from parking.
Keep dogs leashed in parking lots, on the bluff and entering or leaving the beach. The nonprofit describes the sand as leash optional; however, the City’s beach code retains leash language for the designated adjacent beach and water areas. Do not treat seeing loose dogs as proof of a legal exemption: follow posted boundaries and directions, and check current off-leash guidance with Marine Safety at 714-536-5281.
The beach is unfenced. Keep your dog in sight, pick up immediately, avoid wildlife and give leashed dogs space. Check the visitor rules before bringing a puppy or a dog that is ill or reactive.
Parking is part of the city system. Compare coverage in our parking-pass guide; a state pass does not cover these meters. Use current city prices rather than an older hourly figure on a visitor page.
River Jetties: include the river mouth, but check which side you are on
River Jetties is at the Santa Ana River mouth. The Huntington Beach side is Huntington State Beach, whose pet rules allow leashed dogs on the multiuse trail and parking areas, but not on the sand or in the water. It is not a second designated Huntington Dog Beach.
On the Newport Beach side, the City’s beach rules allow leashed dogs before 10 a.m. and after 4:30 p.m., within beach opening hours. Between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., pet dogs are prohibited on both the beach and beachfront sidewalk. Leashes must be no longer than six feet; the beach is not an off-leash area.
Keep clear of habitat fencing, temporary closures and the jetties themselves. Do not use the river channel or a sandbar as an assumed crossing or dog-play area. For a walk, plan an access point and a lawful return route on the same side.
Central Park: Best Friend Dog Park and leashed lake walks
Best Friend Dog Park is the fenced off-leash facility in Huntington Central Park West. The operator’s directions place the entrance at Edwards Street and Inlet Drive; use that entrance rather than a generic Central Park pin.
The park’s information page describes separate large- and small-dog areas, shade canopies, water stations and free admission. Read its current rules before entering. A separate run is useful when an open beach does not suit your dog.
Leash up outside the dog-park enclosure. Central Park’s ordinary paths are for on-leash walks, not a continuation of the off-leash run. The City’s park rules require leashes and cleanup. Keep dogs away from wildlife and horse activity.
Dog-friendly walking paths: start with these public routes
Choose public, open paths and keep the leash short enough to avoid crossing the route of bikes, runners or other dogs. Bring water and bags. A waterfront view does not turn a private dock, HOA path, wildlife reserve or gated maintenance road into public access.
The routes below cover the coast, harbour and park settings requested for this guide. Check signs at the entrance and turn back at a closure. Distances and a continuous loop are not promised where access has not been checked.
The oceanfront boardwalk and paved beach trail
The paved coast path is the place for a leashed walk while keeping off prohibited sand. Huntington State Beach and Bolsa Chica State Beach expressly allow dogs on the multiuse trail; neither allows pet dogs on its sand. Watch bikes and keep the leash from stretching across the path.
Around Downtown, stay on the public paved route and observe local beach signs; the pier is not a pet-dog walking route. This is the oceanfront boardwalk/beach trail, not permission to enter the private paths of The Boardwalk residential community.
Edinger Avenue and the Sunset Aquatic approach
For the harbour-side Edinger walk, use the public sidewalk/bridge approach toward Sunset Aquatic Marina. OC Public Works’ completed bridge report confirms a sidewalk and bike lanes across the Bolsa Chica Channel bridge. Keep your dog leashed and close on this road-adjacent stretch.
That sidewalk is not evidence that a channel embankment, marina dock or fenced wetland trail is open to dogs. Stay on the signed public route and check access before extending the walk beyond it. We have not verified a separate off-road path along the full length of Edinger.
Trinidad Island’s park and public waterfront walkway
The California Coastal Commission access map identifies Trinidad’s waterfront park and a bike path/walkway along Venture Drive and Typhoon Lane, with a route through the island’s center. Use the public park and signed walkway for a leashed harbour walk.
Do not assume the entire island shoreline is a public loop. Respect private yards and marina gates; the Trinidad Island HOA marina page describes association marina facilities, not a public dog-run entitlement. Use the same confirmed route back when an access point is unclear.
Other Huntington Harbour walks and island parks
The official coastal access map is a useful starting point for public access around Trinidad, Davenport, Seabridge and Harbor View. On each outing, connect public sidewalks and park paths rather than trying to follow every waterfront property line.
For local park options, use the City’s parks directory to locate Seabridge Park, Davenport Beach Park, Harbour View Park and Trinidad Park, then check the entrance signs. Park lawns/paths and pocket-beach sand can have different restrictions; do not assume a dog may enter the water because the park allows leashed walks.
Public sidewalks on the islands can be part of an ordinary leashed neighborhood walk. Private bridges, gated communities and dock fingers need their own access permission. There is no verified continuous public dog-walking boardwalk around all of Huntington Harbour.
Central Park paths beyond the dog park
Use the public paths in Central Park East and West for a leashed outing, including lake-side sections where open. Keep dogs out of water, planted restoration areas and equestrian facilities. A short out-and-back can be more comfortable than committing to a large loop with a tired dog.
Shipley Nature Center is a separate managed habitat: its published visitor information excludes pets. The surrounding park paths do not provide pet access through its gates.
Urban Forest and the open Shipley-to-Shore route
The Huntington Beach Tree Society explicitly welcomes support from dog walkers using the Urban Forest and Shipley-to-Shore Nature Trail. Use its trail map for orientation and keep dogs leashed on open public sections.
The name does not mean you can bring a pet inside Shipley Nature Center or through Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. Choose a public segment, obey habitat and restoration closures, and return the way you came if the connection is unclear.
Sunset Beach greenbelt
For a neighborhood walk at the north end of Huntington Beach, the City’s Sunset Beach Specific Plan identifies the linear public greenbelt with pathways and parking. Use open park paths on leash, watching for cars at street crossings.
Stay on the public greenbelt and sidewalks; this is not a statement that dogs are allowed on adjacent beach sand, private patios or the Surfside Colony residential property. Check local entrance signs before extending your route.
Harriett Wieder and neighborhood park paths
For another park setting, Harriett M. Wieder Regional Park explicitly lists dogs permitted on leashes. Stay within open park routes; nearby Bolsa Chica reserve trails have different restrictions.
Use the City’s park directory for nearby options such as Lake, Murdy, Edison, Carr and Bauer parks. These are on-leash neighborhood outings, not additional designated off-leash dog parks. Honor field closures and any dog-exclusion signs at play or activity areas.
For a longer paved outing near the south end, consult OC Parks’ Santa Ana River Trail map and regulations. Select a public, open segment; keep dogs leashed, watch bicycle traffic and do not extend onto prohibited state-beach sand.
Where a walking path is not a dog-friendly route
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife prohibits dogs in Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. Its boardwalks and hiking trails are not alternatives to the leashed beach bike path. Similar names do not mean identical access rules.
Check the boundaries of managed habitats, nesting areas and fenced utility/channel corridors. The paved beach route, an adjacent reserve trail and a private waterside path can look connected while having different rules. Use posted public access rather than a gap in a fence.
Huntington Beach dog washes: self-service and staff bathing
These businesses advertise bathing or self-wash services in Huntington Beach. Self-service means you wash your dog; a bath/grooming appointment means staff do it. Confirm the current service, last-bath cutoff, supplies, price and availability with the location before driving over.
Prices are left to the current business menu rather than presented as permanent guide facts. Do not assume a chain’s service is offered at every branch.
- Dirty Dog Wash — 504 Main Street, Suite C, Downtown; 714-960-7002. The name is spelled “Dirty” on its site. Visit Huntington Beach’s visitor guide lists self-wash and staff grooming; ask about today’s wash availability.
- Top Dog Barkery, Bath & Boutique — 180 Fifth Street, Suite 110; 714-960-3647. Its current site advertises self-wash stations as well as bath/grooming services.

Dog-friendly restaurants, cafés and patios
Ask for dog-friendly seating before you sit down. An outdoor table does not automatically mean pets are permitted, and a hotel’s overnight pet policy does not automatically cover every restaurant or pool. Keep dogs leashed, settled beside your chair and clear of service aisles.
The first entries below have operator-published dog information. The additional local patios are named by Visit Huntington Beach; confirm the current arrangement directly. This is a useful shortlist, not a ranking based on firsthand visits.
- Park Bench Café — outdoor dining in Central Park, with an operator-published canine menu and dog dining section.
- Luna Grill, Bella Terra — its location FAQ says patios welcome dogs; request the appropriate seating.
- Lōrea, Treehouse and Blend Café at Paséa — the hotel explicitly names these outlets in its dog policy; dogs must be supervised and leashed. Its pool is excluded, and the hotel’s dog play area is an amenity, not a public municipal dog park.
- Pacific Hideaway, Sandy’s Beach Shack and Fred’s Mexican Café — downtown/coast options listed by the tourism board; ask each venue about its current dog seating and entrance.
- Mama’s on 39 and Kathy May’s Lakeview Café — Beach Boulevard and Central Park options listed for pet-friendly patio dining.
- Watertable and Cruisers — additional tourism-board-listed patios to check before visiting.
Put the walk, wash and patio together
For Downtown: choose Dog Beach or an allowed paved coastal walk, confirm a nearby wash at Dirty Dog or Top Dog, and reserve appropriate patio seating. For Central Park: use the fenced dog run or a leashed park walk, then check Park Bench or Kathy May’s seating.
For the harbour: use a public Edinger or Trinidad route, carry your own water and return along the verified path. Animalia’s Bolsa Chica location or the Edinger store may fit your route after you confirm wash availability. Keep beaches, parks and businesses as separate stops with their own rules.
If you are planning a move, walk the route from the actual home at the time you would use it. Check crossings, shade, usable outdoor space and HOA pet restrictions. Our communities and parking-pass guide can help you organize those questions without assuming every home or route has the same access.
