Sessions, Mendocino Farms, John's Philly, Beach Hut, and more, ranked by a local who eats them.
The local list
For the best sandwich in Huntington Beach, Sessions West Coast Deli is the one most locals name first, the surf-culture deli with sandwiches named after surf spots. For an elevated lunch, Mendocino Farms; for a real cheesesteak, John's Philly Grill; for a big casual deli sandwich and a beer, Beach Hut Deli; and Jersey Mike's when you want the dependable sub done Mike's Way. Order ahead at lunch, since the good spots build a line.
A great sandwich out here is about matching the spot to the day, but unlike some of my lists, this one I'll name names on, because HB actually has the sandwiches to back it up. Some of these are quick grabs before the sand, one's a sit-down with the dog, and one's really a bar with a good kitchen. I grew up in this town and I eat all of these on the regular, so this isn't a list I pulled off a review site.
I ordered it the way a local would think about it, not by who plates it prettiest. What matters on a real day is whether the bread's right, whether the line moves, and whether you can get in and out without circling the block four times for parking. For the wider picture of eating out here, the Ratowsky Group at Compass keeps a running set of local guides linked at the bottom.

If one place is the local shorthand for a great HB sandwich, it's Sessions. It's the surf-culture deli with the sandwiches named after surf spots and surfers, quality ingredients, and the kind of following that means a line at lunch. This is the one I send people to first when they want to understand why HB takes its sandwiches seriously.
When you want the sandwich a notch more dialed, Mendocino Farms is the elevated fast-casual play, fresh, chef-y, with salads for the table and sandwiches that feel a step above the counter norm. It runs a little pricier, and it's worth it when the occasion calls for a nicer lunch without a sit-down restaurant.
When the craving is specifically a cheesesteak, John's Philly Grill is the spot. It's the no-frills, do-one-thing-well kind of place, a real hot cheesesteak off the grill, and that focus is exactly why it earns its own line on this list. Come hungry.
Jan's is the longtime Main Street health-food institution, and it earns a spot here for the lighter sandwich, plus the smoothies and açaí bowls it's known for. It's been feeding surfers and locals a feel-good lunch for decades, and it's the pick when you want a sandwich that won't slow you down before a paddle or a walk on the sand.
Beach Hut is the casual, surf-vibe deli for a big, hearty sandwich and a cold beer with it. The 'Hut' sandwiches are generous, the room is laid-back, and it's the easy call when you want to actually sit for a minute rather than eat on the run. Solid, unfussy, exactly what a beach-town deli should be.
Sometimes you just want the dependable sub, and Jersey Mike's is that, done Mike's Way with the onions, lettuce, tomato, oil, vinegar, and spices. It's consistent, it's fast, and there's usually one close to wherever you are. No surprises, in the good way.
This one's really a bar-and-grill with a good kitchen more than a sandwich shop, and that's the point, the sandwich comes with a scene. It's a local sit-down spot with a drink, a game on, and live music on the right night. Justin's played the room, so he can tell you it's a good hang, and the club is a fun, only-in-HB entry on a sandwich list.
When you want the relaxed, sit-down version with the dog along, Park Bench Cafe in Huntington Central Park is the local institution, famously dog-friendly, with a menu for the dog too. Shade, grass, and no parking-meter anxiety. A sandwich here is half about the setting.
Some of the best beach sandwiches never come from a sandwich shop. Hit a market like Mother's Market, build exactly what you want, grab drinks and chips, and take the whole thing to the sand. For a group or a family, it's the cheat code: everyone gets their order and nobody waits in a line.
